Store brands and generics

Often the same basic ingredients, for less.

4 min read

Store-brand cleansers, moisturizers, cotton pads, shampoo and over-the-counter products often have very similar ingredients to name brands, at a lower price.

How to compare

  1. Put the two products side by side
  2. Compare the active ingredients and their percentages (on drug products like sunscreen)
  3. Compare the first few ingredients (on cosmetics, listed from most to least)
  4. Compare price per ounce, not package price

Where store brands shine

  • Cotton pads, swabs, razors and basic tools
  • Petroleum jelly and plain moisturizers
  • Sunscreen with the same SPF and broad spectrum label
  • Basic shampoo, body wash and hand soap
