Ingredients over hype

Read the label, not the front of the bottle.

Words like "clean", "natural", "clinical" and "dermatologist-recommended" don't have strict legal definitions for cosmetics. The ingredient list tells you more.

Reading the list

  • Cosmetic ingredients are listed in order of amount, from most to least
  • Drug products (like sunscreen or dandruff shampoo) have a Drug Facts box with active ingredients
  • Fragrance can be listed simply as "fragrance"
  • "Hypoallergenic" has no federal definition

A healthy dose of doubt

If a product promises to change your skin's structure or cure a condition, be skeptical. Claims like that would make it a drug, not a cosmetic.
